WTA Tennis- Sharapova Won Title in Tokyo after 10-Months Away

by Ally White

Former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova finally (re-)experienced success after a 10-month layoff from tennis. The unseeded Sharapova took the title at Saturday's Pan Pacific Open final after 7th-seed Jelena Jankovic retired in the first set due to a wrist injury. Her withdrawal did not, however, bring joy to Sharapova, who wanted to win the final through her own efforts. Nevertheless, the Russian understood the need for withdrawal; the tennis star had had surgery on her should last October, not returning to tennis until May.
The title is Sharapova's first since her surgery and the 20th of her career. Her last title was attained in April of 2008 at Amelia Island.

Sharapova got off to a rough start; the Servian Janovik began strong, breaking her Russian opponent's serve and taking a 2-0 lead. Sharapova, however, rallied and took the next four games. By the time Jankovic took a timeout to have her right arm examined by her trainer, Sharapova had taken the lead in the first match 5-2. The Serb managed just two more points after the medical timeout before deciding to withdraw.

After Jankovic left the court, Sharapova expressed her disappointment but nonetheless hoped for the Serb's quick recovery.

"It was a tough start today. Jelena started off so strong. It's disappointing. It's toward the end of the year and there are a lot of injuries so I wish Jelena a speedy recovery. It was my second final of the year and I was a bit nervous. But I played well enough this week to know I could give her a good match. I just wanted to keep fighting out there and unfortunately Jelena had to stop," said the Russian.

Tokyo is the place in where the 22-year-old Russian attained her first WTA singles and doubles titles, at the 2003 Japan Open.

With this most recent victory, Sharapova is looking forward to her last event of the season at the Beijing tournament, where she hopes to play in top form. After Beijing, Sharapova will prepare herself for the offseason, during which she will train even harder for a strong 2010 performance.

"I have one more tournament left in Beijing. During the off-season, I'll be training and working on my game. It's going to be really a good time for me to create a good base. Actually I have a good enough time to prepare for the next year. I'm really looking forward to the period," Sharapove said.

Jankovic, on the other hand, will try to rehabilitate her arm before the Beijing tournament, but also said that her entry would depend on her doctor's advice. If a short-term recovery becomes unlikely, she will prepare herself for the offseason.

The best of luck to these two great tennis players; hopefully both players will be able to demonstrate their great superb athletic skills at Beijing and prepare for an even better year next season.

2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics: Was it a Good Choice?

by Simon Lowenstein

The 2016 Summer Olympics have been awarded to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, over Chicago in the United States, Tokyo in Japan, and Madrid in Spain. Many viewed Rio as the favorite to become the host of the 2016 Olympic Games, since the Olympics have never been held in South America; Rio is also a cosmopolitan city host to many cultural events such as the Brazilian Carnival, or "Carnaval", a yearly celebration of culture where people wear costumes and have a massive block party. It also helps that Brazil is emerging as a world power, economically and politically, which certainly helped Rio's cause in the race to be the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics. But was Rio De Janeiro a good choice? There are reasons why it was, and a few good reasons why it probably will be risky. But all in all, since South America has never played host to the Olympics, it probably was time for them to join the party.

With an ethnically diverse population of over 6 million inhabitants, Rio de Janeiro is Brazil's second largest city, only to Sao Paulo. Despite it being the second largest city, Rio is actually considered to be Brazil's cultural capital, since it is home to a multitude of museums such as the Quinta da Boa Vista, and libraries, and its buildings are heavily influenced by Portuguese, English, and French architecture. Rio is also home to the Brazilian Carnival, or "Carnaval", an annual showcase of costumes and Brazilian music and dance that draws millions of visitors worldwide. In addition, the city is rich in athletic tradition, home to numerous football (soccer) teams, including Flamengo, one of the best-supported football (soccer) clubs in the world, according to FIFA. Brazil as a whole also boasts an impressive list of popular figures, including esteemed author Paulo Coelho, Pele, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Ronaldinho.

Detractors point out that Rio de Janeiro's serious problems with crime, drugs, and poverty are reasons why the Olympics could be a risky proposition. It is known as one the most dangerous cities in South America and the world, with a poor police force and drug lords that are known to rule the poor areas. Since the event draws spectators from all over the world, a strong police force would obviously be needed to prevent crimes that could become a problem. Of course, Rio has 7 years to rectify these problems, but relatively speaking, that's not a very large amount of time. Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid, the three other cities bidding for the 2016 Olympic Games, are located in better-developed countries with much better infrastructure, which is why many are surprised Rio de Janeiro was awarded the games.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that despite its downfalls, the time has come for South America to host an Olympic Games. As one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, located in a country that is on its way to becoming an international power, Rio de Janeiro is certainly deserving of hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. However, there are quite a few people who are upset over the selection. If you feel the need to vent about it, check out the "Sports" section over at Ventnation.com - a new website that allows individuals to share their innermost, truest feelings about a variety of topics. No matter what your feelings are about Rio being awarded in 2016 Olympic Games, the truth is that it will be the chance for Brazil to showcase its progress to the world.

Football spread betting

by Harry

Football has now become the most bet on sport in the world. This is basically down to the excitement and action it brings which has given rise to it's popularity in almost every, if not all countries across the globe.
When they think of betting, most people think of traditional fixed odds betting where you bet your stake on the odds given for a particular market and then your winnings are calculate from the stake multiplied by these odds.

For example, if Manchester United are listed to win against Everton at 1.5 to 1, then for every £1 you bet you will get £1.5 back. Manchester United are favourites here with Everton listed at 5.5 to 1 for the win. Because United are favourites the odds are low and you don't get much back if they win.

Spread betting acts to make each site of the market more equal. When you spread bet you will see a set of two numbers like this: SELL 60 - 65 BUY. You are basically betting on if you think you think the actual result will fall higher or lower than this 'spread'. For every point/unit the actual result move away from the spread number that you bet on you will win your stake multiplied by the amount the spread moves.

We can use an example with football spread betting. For a football match you might see a spread for total goals in a match like this: SELL 2.8 - 3 BUY.

If you think there will be more than 3 goals in the match then you should BUY. Lets say £10 per goal for this example.

If the match then finishes with 5 goals you would have won £20.

Here are the calculations: 5 goals - 3 that you bought at = 2 goals. 2 goals multiplied by £10 per goal = £20 profit.

If the match only finished with 1 goal then you would lose £20

Here are the calculations: 1 goal - 3 that you bought at = -2 goals -2 goals multiplied by £10 per goal = -£20

If you thought before the match that there would be less than 3 goals, the you would have selected SELL at 2.8. The same calculations apply to work out the winnings/loses.

Maradona To Coach Argentina for 2010

by Giorgio Pirelli

He's one of the greatest players in the world and has now taken over as coach of the Argentinean national team. The legendary wearer of the number 10 soccer shirt, Maradona, is back in action for this country. He dreams of winning the FIFA World Cup one more time - this time from the sidelines as he steers his team to victory and makes soccer history... Now, 48 years of age, Maradona is a seasoned man with a look of having been through it all and survived it. Beset by addiction problems, he seems to have fought his demons hard and won over them. He's even cheated death on occasion! As Maradona himself admits, the worst has already happened... His daughter actually pulled him out from the bottom of the sea... His fans and countrymen have every reason to rejoice as he takes the field again to teach the younger lot. After all, who can forget this legend's on pitch skills? Maradona enjoyed the years when he was playing for Argentine the most, but now duty calls, duty to his country, to his team and to himself. A confident Maradona is sure that Argentina will sail through the 2010 World Cup qualifications. He considers coaching his country a dream come true, though explains that he's only had the boys together for about 40 days since he joined. But Maradona being who he is, he plans to make the most of it. He should have all his players together for 20 days before the World Cup and that's when he plans to lay the foundation and work towards becoming world champions. So, if you're an Argentinean fan, get your world cup soccer jerseys ready for the big event in South Africa!

Coach Maradona's strategy for the team is to vigorously press up front, thereby decreasing the space between attack, midfield and defense. And he's quick to point out that when his team loses the ball, it should be on top of the other team right away without losing precious time. Considering Argentina has an enviable possession rate, it needs to make the most of it.

This soccer uniform number 10 is driven by a dream to win the World Cup once again and to meet Nelson Mandela while in South Africa! He fondly remembers the first time he held the World Cup Trophy... He touched it kissed it and wouldn't let go! That according to Maradona is the 'most beautiful thing'. And that's what he's been telling his players - 30 days of sacrifice to win the World Cup are nothing in a man's life... kissing that trophy is like touching the sky...

Which brings us to something else in Maradona's life that makes him feel like he's touching the sky - his grandson. Yes, this legend is a grandfather! And for him, nothing compares to watching his grandchild... Maybe, it's Maradona's turn to live a calm and smooth life after much struggle and adversity. We are with him... Go Diego!

Who Will Win The South Africa World Cup 2010?

by Tim Lefoe

The World Cup 2010 is now only less than a year away with the qualifying campaigns coming to an end soon. Thus, it might be the best time to see who has done well and who might struggle. With the finalised teams to be decided once the playoffs are done, some of the eventual qualifiers could be considered as trophy favourites.
When trying to decide who might have the best chance of becoming champions, one of the first factors to consider would be the World Cup's location. The 2010 edition marks a landmark event as it will be the first time the competition is hosted in Africa. This could be a boost for African teams while those from Europe and the Americas could face travel fatigue.

The same could have been said when the tournament was first held in Asia in 2002. The end result was more of the same as the European and South American teams continued to dominate. But African teams have continued to evolve since then and are now a serious threat to countries from the two main continents in football.

Of those who have already booked their place in the finals, only Spain and Brazil would be considered likely finalists. Spain have continued where they left off after winning Euro 2008 despite a hiccup during the recent Confederations Cup. That minor setback could prove to be a blessing in disguise as the Spanish now know what mistakes to avoid.

Brazil have outlived a difficult early period during Dunga's time in charge and now look increasingly the best team in the world. Their recent win over Argentina signaled their strong intention to run roughshod over the rest of the competition to claim the title. Whenever the Brazilians have managed to marry their natural talent with modern organisation as they are doing now, they have always come out on top.

Apart from these two representatives from each of the dominant continents, there are few who have also caught the eye. England, Holland and Ivory Coast should be the next heavyweights to join Spain and Brazil in the confirmed list of countries. But none of them have shown the consistent and fearsome form that the latter two have brought fans in the past year.

Until the dust settles down with the final group of countries who have guaranteed their place in the finals, the best choice for the likely 2010 World Cup winner would be Brazil. Their current form is hard to ignore and the country continues to produce top football talent. If the manager Dunga can keep his players motivated and at the peak of their powers, there will be few teams who could actually stop them from a date with destiny.

Score More Goals! Tips For Trainers

by Zdenka Tottova

Everyone knows that soccer games are won by scoring goals. Therefore it is one of the basics of soccer coaching to improve your team's chances of hitting the back of the net, get them to have more shots and be more accurate in shooting. The first step is to get your player to start taking shots and aim the ball at the areas the goalkeepers find most difficult to reach- this will pay dividends in time as your chances of success will improve. However, when coaching youngsters, it is common to find that players are scared of taking difficult shots, which is attributed to their fear of failure, consequently affecting their attitude. To overcome the fear factor...
* Boost their confidence by praising them when they take a shot- even if they miss

* Prevent other team mates from moaning if they miss- it will benefit team morale in general if they learn to support each other from an early age.

* Tell players it's better to shoot and miss than not to shoot at all.

Another reason why young players are afraid to shoot is lack of confidence in their technique. The only way to improve this is to practice! Fortunately, the techniques for shooting are identical to those in passing soccer drills, so as a player's ability to pass the ball - through use of the sidefoot, instep (laces) and even outside of the foot to swerve the ball - so will their shooting skills. Here are some basic features of good shooting that you should explain to your players and get them used to:

* Observing the goalkeeper's position - have they left a gap the attacker can exploit?

* Selecting the best technique - side-foot for greater accuracy, or instep (laces) and good "follow through" for power?

* Non-kicking foot alongside the ball

* Head down, eyes on the ball when striking

* Body over the ball

* Contact with the middle to top half of the ball

* Composure And here are some ideas for improving the rate of scoring:

* Shoot wide rather than high - there's always the chance of getting a deflection that might wrong-foot the goalkeeper.

* Shoot low - it's harder for a keeper to reach shots along the ground because it's further for them to travel to get to the ground.

* Shoot across the keeper - it's tougher for them to hold these shots, and means they could divert the ball back into the path of another attacker.

Here are some basic tips for conducting shooting sessions:

* Use appropriate portable goals (or corner flags the correct width apart) and introduce defenders.

* Vary the service - players should strike balls coming towards, away and across them, plus volleys (bouncing balls), first time etc.

* Make sure you have plenty of balls and keep changing ball-boys!

Spanish Soccer- Ibrahimovic Stays with Barcelona

by Audrey Nolan

Despite a very juicy offer from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic would move from Inter only to Barcelona. The player said on Monday that Barca was the only team that could take him out of Italy, and the only team capable of making him a better player.
Ibrahimovic made his debut with the Spanish team on Wednesday as a substitute against Manchester City. He set up Lionel Messi for two points against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Now, he is preparing himself for a final against Shakhtar Donetsk in the European Supercup on Friday. The player wants to demonstrate that he is in sync with Spanish football as well as with his new teammates. Ibrahimovic was brought in to replace Samuel Eto'o, who was transferred to Real Madrid in a multimillion-dollar deal. Eto'o had helped Barcelona win eight major trophies, including two Champions League titles.

Ibrahimovic had been with Internazionale since 2006; he was brought to Inter from Juventus with a €24.8 million deal. At Inter, the player said that he had an agreement with the president to reject any teams that made an offer for him - with the exception of Barcelona. With Barcelona, he said, "you at least discuss."

Discuss they did. The deal was made for €66 million.[sv1]

"It's the club that can make me a better football player than I am today," the 27-year-old Ibrahimovic said[sv2] . "I want to be part of this project and history that Barcelona is making now."

The player also said that he now faced a great deal of pressure, but added that pressure was a normal part of being a top player in European football. Part of the pressure involves his interaction with his new teammates, particularly Messi, who is one of the best players on the team. Ibrahimovic and Messi have the potential to create a phenomenal duo even though each has a very different style. In fact, Ibrahimovic has himself noted the potential; the Swedish player admires the Argentine a great deal.

Ibrahimovic has also expressed his confidence in the tactics and style of Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, who has brought the Spanish team to an entirely new level of play. Ibrahimovic hopes to bring even more talent to an already very-talented team.

For his part, Guardiola has expressed his support for the new player, who is recovering from a surgery due to a hand injury.

"He can have all the time he needs [to adapt] as long as he continues to show the same commitment that he is showing day in, and day out," Guardiola said during a news conference.

Ibrahimovic does not regret rejecting Real Madrid's proposal. Although the team has spent a quarter of a billion Euros already, recruiting players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso, Madrid is still rebuilding. Ibrahimovic seems to think that Barca has as much talent combined with a head start that gives it an edge in the competition.

Countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa

by brono pisino

With less than 300 days to go to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa is in top gear in terms of preparation and spirit. Receiving a shot in the arm for successfully hosting and organizing the recently held Confederations Cup, the country is all set to deliver on its promise to host a spectacular World Cup for fans worldwide. Even US President Obama is expected to attend the opening ceremony! Wonder if he'll get into the spirit of the game and wear a soccer shirt or the South African makaraba hat?! Or, who knows, maybe he'll even have his own vuvuzela to blow on! Dr Danny Jordaan, Chief Executive Officer of the Organizing Committee, stressed that the 300 day mark should serve as a reminder of the important work completed and more that still needs to be done in the build up to the tournament. "It is important to record this milestone as a significant one in our country's history, but for those involved in organizing the tournament - from the construction worker to the marketing executive - it is just another marker along the route to ensuring the World Cup is a success," said Dr Jordaan. The completion of the stadiums, infrastructure and transportation projects, the initiation of the volunteer program and the World Cup Final Draw are some milestones to cross on the way to 2010.
Fourth of December, 2009, is a big day for the country and Cape Town in specific as it will host the World Cup Final Draw. The 32 teams who qualify for the World Cup will be drawn into groups for the first round of the tournament. South Africa took another step towards World Cup readiness by launching its first visitor information centre. This and other Visitor Information Centers is the government's initiative to boost tourism in the host cities of Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Polokwane and Mangaung/Bloemfontein. Developed at a cost of 6.7 million rand, the centers will be a one-stop, centralized service to assist fans with information regarding tourism products.

Another shot in the arm for South Africa is President Obama's expected attendance at the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup that will take place in Johannesburg on the 11th of June. FIFA's president, Sepp Blatter, revealed Obama's acceptance of the invitation during a special media discussion in Johannesburg. This would mark Obama's first visit to Africa since he was elected President of the US. The opening ceremony will kick off at Soccer City, the ultra modern 100,000 capacity stadium, with either hosts Bafana Bafana or former world champions Italy playing. Blatter emphasized that the world should trust South Africa, which will deliver one of the most memorable World Cups ever! After all, the country passed the test of hosting the Confederations Cup with flying colors. And that bodes well for the 2010 World Cup. So, book your tickets, buy your soccer uniforms and other soccer merchandise and make your way to the centre stage of world soccer - South Africa 2010!

Ronaldo to Replace Brand Beckham?

by brono pisino

You've seen him in advertising campaigns for Nike, Coke, FIFA Street 2, Extra Joss, and of course, his bare-chested appeal in the Pepe Jeans ad. According to advertising and marketing experts and football agents, Cristiano Ronaldo has the 'X factor' that could well replace David Beckham as the footballer who earns the most from endorsements. Considering Ronaldo's teenybopper appeal and this age group's importance as the advertisers' main target audience, it might just happen... and soon. Experts feel there is currently a need for a central soccer brand. Beckham's 34 years of age and current career phase doesn't exactly make him a hot youth icon anymore. Sure, no one can deny his good looks and knee weakening ability among adults, but he's past the stage of driving 13 year olds crazy. And that's where Ronaldo can step in and fill Beck's shoes. The 24 year old Portuguese has all the right qualities to appeal to kids and teens - he's a looker, has a great body, plays well and is part of an extremely popular and successful team.
If Becks raked in $42.5 million through product endorsements last year, Ronaldo earned $19.6 million. But now that this 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year has become the world's most expensive player after his transfer from Man U to Real Madrid, his worth has sky rocketed. When Ronaldo was 'unveiled' on the 6th of July at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium wearing Real's soccer uniforms, nearly 80,000 screaming teens and young adults were there to greet him!

Actually, Ronaldo seems to be following in Beckham's footsteps in more ways than one! Becks left Man U for a successful stint with Real, so did Ronny boy! Becks wore the number 7 soccer shirt at Man U, as did Ronaldo after him! Becks was the ultimate youth icon, as Ronaldo is slated to be! If there's anything that can go against this young man, it's his lack of 'family life' and the accusation that he's not much of a team player. This could bring his appeal down among advertisers. Beckham continues to shine in that arena with his image of a happy family man and his reputation as a great team player. For this reason, some experts would like to see Ronaldo settled and married to a nice girl! But, at the end of the day, it's his on field performance that will determine his success as brand Beckham's successor. After all, you're only as good as your last match... And companies are looking for endorsements from soccer stars so they can associate their product with the star's phenomenal success. As far as veteran football agent, Jon Holmes, is concerned, "Ronaldo is a good looking guy and I would say his level of articulateness is about the same as Beckham's... He is probably a better player than Beckham in that he is more versatile. Beckham is a workhorse of a player, Ronaldo seems to be a more natural player."

Well, let's see if Ronaldo is going to be the next big clothes horse after Becks! Time will tell...

What Do We Know About Manchester United

by Footballss

Manchester United Football club is one of the most successful and rich clubs in English football. The club was established in 1878 by the workers of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, and was called Newton Heath LYR. In 1885, the club has reached the final of Manchester Cup competition, and won it the following year. In 1902, the club was renamed and became Manchester United Football Club. John Henry Davies, a wealthy brewery owner, bought the team, saving it in time from large debt, and replacing its colors to the famous kit we today tend to associate with the club: red shirt and white trousers.

Which football club won its first FA Cup in 1906?

by Simon Lewis

1906's FA Cup Final, saw Everton win for the first time, when they won against Newcastle United in a game played at Crystal Palace. Everton's goalscorer in a 1-0 win was Alex "Sandy" Young.
Newcastle was playing in its second final in two seasons, having lost the previous year's final (and with it the prestigious League and FA Cup double) to Aston Villa. The Geordies were also the hot favourite for the Cup. The first decade of the new century was indeed a golden period in the club's history. In total the Magpies won the league 3 times (1904-05, 1906-07 and 1908-09), were runners up in three Cup finals - 1905 and 1908 as well as 1906, before finally winning the FA Cup in 1910.

But enough about Newcastle, this was Everton's day. The journey to the final had seen a defeat for West Brom 3-1 in the first round before a tricky away tie at Chesterfield was negotiated with a 3-0 win. In the next round, a narrow 1-0 win spelled the end for Bradford City, before a classic of a quarter final saw Sheffield Wednesday depart from the competition in a 4-3 win for the Everton. And then, the mother of all semi finals, a 2-0 victory over neighbours Liverpool.

The final itself was a dour affair by all accounts - these things so often are. However, the Toffees' winner, coming with just 13 minutes of the match left was worthy of being the winner of an FA Cup Final. It was set up by Jack Sharp on the right wing as, after taking Jack Taylor's pass, he centred for Alex Young to apply the necessary finish past a despairing Lawrence in the Magpies' goal.

Alex "Sandy" Young was a Scotland International who played for the Toffeemen between 1901 and 1911. He scored a total of 109 League goals for Everton in a total of 275 League appearances. As well as registering the only goal in the 1906 FA Cup final at Crystal Palace, he is the Blues' fourth most prolific goalscorer - only William Ralph "Dixie" Dean, Bob Latchford and Graeme Sharp scored more. Following his FA Cup exploits of 1906, he was the top scorer in the football league in season 1906-07 - including a brace in Everton's pleasing 2-1 win at Anfield. Born in the Falkirk area in 1880, Young's demise is not known. There are a pair of conflicting stories, he was either hanged for sheep rustling in the Australian outback, or died in an Edinburgh asylum.

Manchester United - what prospects for 2009/10?

by Steve Yates

There are many reasons why Manchester United are the most successful football team in England - and have been for as long as most people can remember. And especially since the development of the Premier League, the club has entered an era of almost unprecedented success.

The Old Trafford Stadium keeps expanding - its current capacity is over 76,000 - and the demand for tickets shows no sign of slowing down, despite the economic downturn.

Much has been made, quite rightly, of the influence over the club of the legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. A blunt, at times irascible Scotsman, Ferguson has been at 'The Theatre of Dreams' since November, 1986 - a tenure almost unprecedented in any era of the game. He has managed to stay hungry, determined and, most importantly, in total command during that time and will, when he does eventually decide to stand down, undoubtedly be hard to replace.

Ferguson's main attribute, for me, has been to keep United at the top whilst continually changing his team. There has been one spell - between 2002 and 2005 - when the club 'only' had an FA Cup to display from the major competitions; but even then they could hardly be said to have languished in mediocrity.

The manager has had that priceless ability of being able to move players in and out of his squad, without it disrupting team spirit or damaging the pattern of play. Additionally, he's shown a completely single-minded approach to moving out players he thought would be possibly past their best or simply not up to standard. Yes, he's made a few mistakes - Kleberson, Veron, Taibi, Djemba Djemba, Jordi Cruyff - but some of those could realistically have been expected to have been successful. Kleberson was the midfield hub of a Brazilian team that won the World Cup, for goodness sake.

However, I do happen to think that Sir Alex has a hard season in prospect. Not one where United are in danger of plummeting down to fifth, or anything like that. But I do feel things could be a little more problematic when it comes to running away with the league title again.

Now, I'm not just saying that because Ronaldo has flown away to his spiritual home - I'm sure they'll suit each other perfectly. Although a player of his skill - and the number of goals he scored - will not easily be found, it's certain the staff at Old Trafford will bring at least one player in to take the winker's place.

My problems are elsewhere. I do think there are a number of players who are just about past their use-by date. Ryan Giggs might have been PFA Player of the Year but we all know that was a sentimental award - unless he really was exceptional in the 15 league games he started during the season! Clearly, Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes cannot be expected to play much next season.

Then there are others about whom you can't be really sure they're going to be quite good enough. Darren Fletcher has come on enormously in the last two years but the same can't really be said for Nani, Anderson, Ji-Sung Park and one or two more. It was abundantly clear in the Champions' League Final that Barcelona's midfield was inordinately superior to Manchester's. Owen Hargreaves, hopefully for United, will return to something like his best form - but Michael Carrick still looks a bit of a 'flat track bully' to me,

And, of course, there are the classic Berbatov and Rooney problems. I don't suppose I'm alone in wondering what on earth Wayne Rooney was doing spending half of last season stuck out on the left 'doing a job for the team' and looking a shadow of the player we all think he could be. And the manager's faith in the expensive Berbatov was clearly demonstrated in the last few vital matches of the season when the player barely got picked. Personally, for all Tevez's enthusiasm and running around, the best pairing up front for Manchester United has to be the intelligence of Berbatov - who did have more 'assists' than any other United player last year - with the brilliant Rooney playing in his best position alongside him.

I am looking forward to the 2009/2010 season in the Premier League. Manchester United can be sure of playing their fast, flowing football and will, of course, be right there at the end. I do think, though, that, if they are going to achieve the amazing feat of four titles in a row, the manager has got quite a lot of hard work to do.

History of the Manchester United Shirt

by Fran Walker

The premier league English football club Manchester Uniteds home ground is called Old Trafford that resides in Trafford, Manchester. Affectionately known as The Red Devils, they boast over 300 million international fans.
Managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Man-u team has won 21 major titles since being under his reign from 1986 becoming one of the most successful football teams in English football history. During Manchester Uniteds remarkable history, many famous players have run out in the just as famous Manchester united shirt, which can trace its roots back to when the football club was named Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club.

During the Newton Heath days (1878-1892) The shirts were made of Yellow and Green sections (that reappeared a century later) before toying with blue shorts and red/white shirt combo (1892-1894) and then briefly white shirt and a red sash. At the turn of the century the Manchester United kits were experimented with, with the colour scheme and design changing significantly. Blue and White stripes, Red and White stripes and even white shirts featuring a large bolded red V which saw the 1909 FA cup final out.

Most of the old shirts have been recreated for the public to wear them as retro tops

It was in 1928, that the Manchester United football team permanently switched to Red, Black and White colours that they have become famous for and has been the basis of the home kit ever since.

The away strip is White shorts and socks and black shorts. The most notorious Man U kit was the all grey kit, notorious because they did not win a single game whilst wearing it during the 1995-1996 season. The players claiming it was because team-mates could not see eachother and the colour grey was too dull and muted to stand out! The Manchester United Third Strip is an all-blue ensemble out of respect to the kit used in the 1968 European Cup triumph.

The Manchester United shirt worn for current home games is red with a single white stripe running down the back. The words "The Red Devils" features on a patch. The team's devil mascot image is sewn on the bottom-left of the shirt. The club logo adorns inside a red shield on the left breast. The emblem has been changed over the years but takes inspiration from the crest of the City of Manchester. The words "Red Devil" were added in the 1960s after Matt Busby overheard the phrase being used by a local rugby club. The away shirt in today is white with blue piping at the edges. It has red trim on the neck and the club emblem is on a white background on the left breast.

The New Wembley Stadium: Home To English Football

by Paul McIndoe

For any soccer fan, a visit to the new Wembley Stadium is a must. Not only is it one of the world's most outstanding modern stadiums, but is host to the best of English football and features a veritable 'footie-fest' of the nation's leading cup finals and Football League play-offs every season.

The Football Association - the sport's governing body - is planning a £12million move of its administrative headquarters from Soho Square to the new Stadium during July 2009. As Wembley is also the home venue for all of England's international fixtures - including the qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup Finals - the move will firmly establish the stadium as the 'home of English football'.

As the English football season progresses towards its climax in May, Wembley hosts a number of prestigious finals including the traditional finale to the football season - the FA Cup Final. But, before that the cup final season begins in either late February or early March with the staging of the Carling Cup Final. This show piece cup competition of the Football League will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Wembley in 2010.

Next up is the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final played at Wembley in early April. This competition is exclusively for clubs that compete in League One and League Two of the Football League. The 2009 final was an absolute thriller with Luton beating Scunthorpe 3-2 after extra time in front of a substantial lower league football crowd of 53,378.

In May the games come thick and fast at the Stadium, starting with the FA Trophy Final and FA Vase Final, played on successive days on the second weekend of the month.

Next, and still in May, the Football League hosts the Play-off finals when the last promotion spots for The Championship, League One and League Two are decided. Indeed, The Football League Championship play-off final - normally played on late May Bank Holiday Monday - is billed as football's most lucrative 'one-off' game. The winners will be promoted to the Barclays Premier League and with that comes access to lucrative TV money.

Finally, the last weekend in May sees the traditional season finale; the FA Cup final. This is one of the few 'protected' games to be televised live on terrestrial channels and is the daddy of all football competition finals. As you can see, May is also the month when the owners of London hotels - particularly those situated around Wembley - rub their hands in glee at the glut of 'no vacancies' signs, as they accommodate the thousands of football fans travelling to the capital to watch their teams in action.

But, fans of football that can't get a ticket to a game at Wembley needn't despair. They can still access the stadium and sample its marvellous features at first-hand by buying a Stadium tour ticket.

Online Football Blogs

by Jane Hilton

With today's technology, the Internet has made it easier for Football die-hards to talk about their beloved game through football blogs. Blogs have become a very popular trend. Everyday Joe's can blog about football, basketball, their mothers cooking, and dance recitals. I have even seen blogs that are written in a horse's perspective. Football blogs are very popular and you can find blogs on college, high school, pro, or semi pro football.

When searching for a football blog you might be looking for one of two things, information or intelligent conversation. Like many things found on the web, not everything is 100% correct. A blog is a personal diary/information of what is happening in someone's life, the world, or on the web. Blogs allow the reader to read someone's personal information, sometimes a blog will allow for comments and communication with other blog readers.

Football blogs can be about anything from "A Day in the Life of a College Football Star" to "I Love the Dallas Cowboys". Searching for a football blog can be tricky. It will more than likely take a lot of time ready and analyzing the publisher to see if the information the present is both knowledgeable and informative. Once you have found a football blog, make sure there are other blog readers that share your views. If the Author is writing to people who only like a 3/4 defense and you want information about a 4/3 defense you might not find it there. The same is true if you are reading a football blog tailored to College Football and you want information on Arena Football.

With everything on the Internet, have fun and enjoy someone else knowledge and opinion. Make sure and remember that there is a real person siting behind the words with real feelings and opinions. Blogs can be fun, enjoyable, and very informative. But, blogs can also be hurtful and full of false information.

Watch TV, Movies, Sports Online

by Yesu Das

I am a self proclaimed sport addict. I love everything about sports…tuning in for the big game with a big drink and a bag of chips. Getting together with friends, watching alone or catching the old ball game with my dad are some of the best memories of my lif!. Who can resist a friendly wager with a friend who cheers for a rival team? And what is better than reading the paper the next day when your team wins? A few years ago when I had to move abroad for my studies, I started feeling the pain of no longer being able to watch the best games from my favourite football, basketball, hockey and baseball teams. This made living abroad such a drag for me. Sports are such a huge part of my life that it feels like someone ripped out a piece of my soul. The local cable company here wanted a ridiculous amount of money for the official sports package and then I had to watch the sports that THEY chose for me! After several months of searching and spending lots of money on stupid systems and scams, I finally found a solution that allows me to watch sports, movies and my favourite television shows for free on my PC http://dcinanni.watch2000.hop.clickbank.net/ I now have the pleasure of watching my favourite team whenever and wherever I want. And the best thing is that it's right on my PC so I can chat and speak with my friends from home while watching the game. Want to connect your PC to the TV…no problem! This has improved my life as I am no longer home sick. If you are living away from home and want to get online tv, or if you are sick of cable companies taking your money and providing bad customer support and service, make the same decision that I did, and download the revolutionary TVonPC today! http://dcinanni.watch2000.hop.clickbank.net/

Thean Hou Temple, a synergy of architectural styles

by Naveen Marasinghe

Construction began at the 6,760 square meters (1.67 acres) plot of land on top of the Robson Heights, near the Lorong Bellamy in 1981. The site looks over the Jalan Syed Putra or the federal Highway. The building that was constructed was the Thean Hou Temple. The temple is a Chinese temple and has six levels. Construction at the site was completed in 1987; however the Thean Hou Temple was formally opened to the public in 1989. The Thean Hou Temple is situated in the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and is a major attraction. The land and building is owned by the Persatuan Hainan Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan or in English known as the Selangor and Federal Territory Hainan Association, and the site is also maintained by this same group. The Thean Hou Temple was constructed by the Hainanese community that lives in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The Thean Hou Temple is consecrated to the Chinese goddess Tian Hou who known as the Heavenly Mother. The Thean Hou Temple combines architectural elements of Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. The grandiose architecture is a major attraction to the tourists. The Taoism temple itself is a combination of contemporary and ancient architectural styles. The Thean Hou Temple consists of a Prayer Hall, a Wishing Well, Chinese Medicinal Herbs Garden, a Tortoise Pond, statues of the goddess Tian Hou and various other depictions and also a statue set among the rocks near a waterfall of the goddess Guan Yin. The goddess Guan Yin is the goddess of Mercy. There are many festival and special event held at the temple. So if one is in the area and planning to spend a few nights there then obviously one should find a serviced residence in Kuala Lumpur. A good place that offers Kuala Lumpur serviced apartments is the Ascott Kuala Lumpur.

2008: The Year of Cristiano Ronaldo

by Victoria Cochrane

Ever since Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Manchester United in August 2003, the £12million winger has never been far from the headlines.

Making his debut in the first game of the 2003/04 season, in a comfortable 4-0 win over Bolton, Ronaldo came off the bench to replace Nicky Butt to become the first ever Portuguese player to represent the Red Devils.

From the raw talent signed by Sir Alex Ferguson - after being passed over by the then-Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier and almost being bought by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal - Ronaldo has turned into one of the modern day greats who is among the very best in world football. This claim has been verified by the fact that in 2008 Ronaldo received the Ballon d'Or, often called the European Footballer of the Year Award; although, nowadays players from any nationality playing in any country can win the accolade. The previous year Ronaldo had come second to the Brazilian Kaka.

Ronaldo became the third Portuguese international (joining Eusebio and Luis Figo) and the fourth Manchester United player (after Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best) to win the award. Rather than go by a player's performances over the course of a season, the Ballon D'or is awarded to whoever is deemed to have been best over the course of a calendar year.

Ronaldo started 2008 scoring against Aston Villa in the FA Cup before scoring his first ever hat-trick, in the 6-0 demolition of Newcastle. The winger, or floating second striker as he was often employed, scored 24 goals between New Year and the end of the 2007/08 season. His goal against the Czech Republic helped his national side reach the quarter final of the 2008 European Championships. An ankle injury delayed Ronaldo's return to club football but he managed another nine goals before the end of the calendar year, including four in four days as he scored match-winning doubles against West Ham United and Hull City.

Thirty players were nominated for the 2008 award, with 96 international journalists voting for their top five choices. Ronaldo came top with 446 points, followed by Barcelona's Lionel Messi with 281 points and Liverpool's Fernando Torres with 179 points.

Since then, however, Cristiano Ronaldo has been snubbed by his main rival. When asked to name his dream team of 2008, Messi neglected to select Ronaldo instead opting for a midfield of Javier Zanetti, Cesc Fabregas, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Regardless, Ronaldo remains very much in focus as being one of the world's best and every transfer window brings rumours that clubs from across the continent are preparing huge bids to pry him away from Old Trafford.
